The President’s Letter

This has been a very special year. As the pandemic goes on, we all hope it may end soon so that we can go back to our normal lives.

However, in Congregation Amijai we keep on working with a burst of energy and more enthusiasm than ever.

We have been forced to adapt very quickly to this new normal and, thanks to everyone’s effort, we were able to carry our kehilah forward with many projects and activities that keep the flame of Amijai alight.

Firstly, we had to update our technology so that we could reach the homes of our members at each Shabbat service, for each study group, class, lecture, minyanim or any of our many activities. To that end, we have significantly invested in technological equipment and greater connectivity. This has considerably improved the quality of our online activities.

Our social team ALMA was in charge of numerous projects and activities. Among others, I would like to mention Alimentando el ALMA, with over 200 people cooking meals, knitting and donating warm clothing as well as medications and non-perishables. Hundreds of meals were handed out, together with infant milk and tons of food, every month, in partnership with several other organizations, like Asociación Civil Checar, the Comedor Sucre (soup kitchen), Fundación Pele Ioetz, Hogar de Ancianos Beit Sion (Nursing Home), Asociación Civil Dar es Dar, Merendero Sonrisas Felices, Pedro Elizalde Children’s Hospital and the Ricardo Gutiérrez Children’s Hospital.

The “Contá Conmigo” project, which now has over one hundred volunteers, started out as a tool to provide company for our grandpas during lockout, by means of weekly telephone calls. This has evolved into a network of social and human encouragement, which helped over 300 seniors feel close in spite of the distance.

In the Youth Department, too, work continued despite the impossibility of holding face-to-face activities. More than 100 kids now take part each Saturday, together with 25 madrichim and coordinators.

AMJ LAB, our young adults project for those aged 18-35 offers a wide range of activities throughout the year with an attendance of nearly 1500 young people.

As to our cultural events, we were able to quickly adapt to the new scenario and with the help of online platforms and tools we could continue offering many of them. Over 300 activities, workshops and meetings have taken place, with more than 1000 people joining on a weekly basis.

A great deal is being done at Amijai and there is still a long way to go.

This is our goal -to improve ourselves every year in every community aspect.

I would like to thank the core staff, all volunteers and the members of the board for all their work and effort throughout the year.

I would also like to thank our Rabbi Ale Avruj because he is one of the main reasons why Amijai has shown such exponential growth over the last years.

Thank you for all your continuous teachings and wisdom, for your warmth and sensitivity, for making each of us feel part of a big family.

Because that is what I truly feel -Amijai is a big family.

I would also like to thank my family, my wife and daughters for their support and for being there for me at all times.

Lastly, I would like to thank each and every member because their support makes it possible for our great congregation to keep going. You are our MINYAN. You are Amijai’s most important asset. You provide life and meaning to what is being done here. You encourage us to keep thinking and working, to design new ideas and to seek improvement at every activity.

Our goal is for everyone, kids, young ones and adults to find their own place in Amijai.

May we all have a year of joy, fulfillment and good health and may we be able to meet again to continue building our community.
